2017 Northeast Alabama BEST
Robotics Competition
Northeast
Alabama BEST Robotics provides opportunities for students grades 5-12 to become
competent and confident in applying math, science, technology and engineering
principles to real-life challenges. This culminates in the Fall when teams are
judged on oral presentation, educational display, spirit, sportsmanship, interview
skills, engineering notebook, and robot performance. Teams winning at the local
level are eligible to compete in the regional competition at Auburn.
All required
materials and supplies are provided to participating schools by Northeast
Alabama BEST, which also provides access to technical support and mentoring to
BEST Teams.
The competition
runs for six weeks and includes the following events:
·
Saturday,
September 16 – Kick Off Day, Northeast Alabama Community College.
At Kick Off, teams learn about the
challenge for the year, receive their kits, and are provided instruction in
anything from design to programming. In addition, the playing field is
revealed, and students are given the opportunity to measure, photograph and
view the field.
·
Tuesday,
October 17 – BEST Practice Day, Jackson County Fairgrounds, Scottsboro.
BEST practice day is co-located with the Career Exploration Opportunities (CEO)
Expo this year. Each team is given practice time on the playing field so that
they may practice driving their robot. Since this takes place as part of the
CEO Expo, approximately seven hundred students (Jackson County and Scottsboro
Schools) will be touring this hands-on career fair.

Northeast
Alabama BEST Robotics provides all the materials and supplies necessary for
teams to compete. Only the materials included in the kit may be used to
construct the robot. This means that teams from the poorest school districts
across the nation can compete on a level playing field with schools from the
richest districts. We could not do this
without the support of our sponsors!
Press Access
All
events are open to the public. However, access to the arena floor is limited.
Members of the press should check in at the Information/Registration table to
secure credentials that will allow access to the arena floor. A BEST staff
member will provide an orientation to the competition.
